Logistic Network Extension

Post by emwood »

Is there any way to extend a logistic network over a distance covered by another logistic network without intersecting the two?

Essentially I have my uranium enrichment plant a short distance away from my nuclear power block. I'd like to transport the fuel cells using robots, and to keep this logistic "circuit" separate from the main logistic network in that factory. Is there a way to do this? Is there any way to extend logistic networks without using roboports?

The only way to join and form logistics networks is to make the inner area of the roboport coverage overlap, so the roboports are connected with that dashed line. And the only way to keep logistics networks separate is to make sure the inner areas of the roboport coverage stay separate, so roboports are not connected with that dashed line.
There is no manual switch to join or separate networks.

If you want to connect two separate networks over some distance, you have to build some kind of roboport chain between both to create a path of overlapping roboport areas. This usually works, however it can happen robots from the far end of one network half will travel through the path to the far end of the other half to deliver stuff. Depends on where items are provided and requested.

I have several separate networks. The outer defense wall is divided into sections, and each section has its own logistics network, supplied by one supply train station. The main base has one big logistics network. Each nuclear reactor area (big lakes covered by tileable reactor setups, in the end 100-200 reactors) has one logistics network dedicated for supplying nuclear fuel cells. Each nuclear reactor area is separated by 1 empty tile from the main base logistics area, and I built a handover mechanics to get fuel cells into the reactor area and used up fuel cells out of it.

I created separate these reactor networks to ensure there are always enough free logistics bots to supply the reactors, and to make sure these are always powered (by solar panels) independently from the main power. Bringing such huge nuclear power plants back up from a blackout due to fuel cell outage is very difficult, if you use the logistics network to supply fuel and your robots are far away and all your roboports have no power and are connected to that power grid that has the blackout. You can't pull yourself out of the swamp by the hair with just one power and logistics network.

There are also small temporary standalone logistics networks around train stations while I build new mining outposts.

Not that i am aware of even with mods.

You could have an isolated network just for the nuke plant, making sure the orange area do not touch inside a large one, like an island, if it's small enough, the other robots from the larger network will just ignore it as if it was a lake for them and the robots from the island will not venture outside.

I do that mostly for travel distance/path and keeping a network very reactive, not so much to manage quantity of material for which i use condition on inserters that are "connected to the logistic network" and the different types of chests.

May be my setup is similar to what you're trying to achieve and an example could help.
This is from my base.
The general setup with the power plant on the left. You see the small gap between the big base network from the right and the power plant network:

Handover in detail:

Blueprint of the handover. It makes sure enough fuel cell get in, used fuel cell get out, and there are enough robots within the network. If there are not enough, they're requested by requester chests and inserted into 2 roboports by inserters. It's a bit distributed due to the constrained space.

The same handover principle is used for the power plant you see on the bottom right of the first picture.
