When I start the game, a login window appears. After entering the correct informations, I recieve following error message:

Failed to reach auth server. Code 520. Error: Unknown Error.

Even after skipping it, I'm unable to neither use mods, nor play in Multiplayer mode

Test a simple SSL connection to another remote host..

Try openssl s_client -connect google.com:443

It should connect on TCP 443, display some cert and cipher info, and wait for your command.

If there is some other problem, like DNS, clock sync, it will not work.

Check for CA cert package:

I am having a similar issue. Verision 1.1.94, build 61774, Windows 64. I cannot log into steam or view or host multiplayer games, and I get the error "Failed to reach auth server. Code: 520. Error: Unknown Error"

I have reinstalled factorio today, and checked for the latest windows updates and installed them. This is a new issue as of yesterday.

Wait, do you mean you enter "dpkg -l|grep ca-certificates" on the prompt of an openSSL session? That wouldn't work, dpkg is the package manager of Debian and friends, so you must run it from the system prompt! Usually, you should be root (or run dpkg under sudo), but "dpkg -l" will just list the installed packages, so in this case you could also run it as a normal user.

There have been a number of posts over the years, one offs here and there, that appear to have never reached resolution.

This one, thread 96422, was solved by flushing the dns (Windows: elevated cmd promt -> "ipconfig /flushdns"), however, while their error message was the same ("Failed to reach auth server"), their code was different (410).

Otherwise, a workaround if you are the one hosting or you're playing with a friend who's hosting, is to uncheck the options for making it public and verifying the user's identity. This will at least get you in and playing in these conditions.

Oh! But as I was writing this and still trying to find an answer, I did find this (for Windows 7 users) from Steam: https://steamcommunity.com/app/427520/d ... 583865082/

Edit: (file name: Windows6.1-KB2992611-x64.msu) "Update to enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 as default secure protocols in WinHTTP in Windows" installing this fixed this issue

OK EVERYONE, FIXED IT

You're gonna laugh. So I checked all the other forum posts - I'll make some notes for people stumbling across this post in the future:

- I tried changing my DNS server, from the default "automatic" to google's DNS server (8.8.8.8), no improvement.
- The windows 7 fixes posted above don't apply to Windows 11. I did find my TLS settings and tried changing from 1.3 to 1.2 or 1.1 and nothing helped.
- I tried reinstalling factorio
- I had steam verify the integrity of game files
- I checked for windows updates

Nothing helped.

I remembered that for my halloween party, I had enabled my router's guest network and disabled the password for the guest network, so my friends could all get internet easily. Even though my computer only connects to the secure main network, I figured I'd try reverting the router settings and see.

AND LO AND BEHOLD, disabling the unsecured guest network, even though I wasn't connected to it, solved my problem. WEIRD.
