headless server is laggy

Hello everyone,

I installed a headless factorio server (Version 1.1.80 - linux64) on my ubuntu VPS.

Server

CPU: 10 vCores (cpu)
Memory: 48GB (ram)
Space: 800GB (ssd)
Network: Sync - 500Mbit/s (fix) up to 1Gbit/s (flex)
OS: Ubuntu 20.04.3
IPS: Strato (German IPS)


The Server is ment for me and up to 4 friends to play on it, but it is lagging already when just one player is online.
We currently play a redmew spiral map, that is running flawless if hostet in a normal game session for multiple players.
But we wanted a headless server hosted remotely so each of us can play any time with or without the others..

What I tried so far..

- I already monitored the hardware and network load with glances (terminal tool)
and network is only at like 20-30Kb/s while on the hardware there is like 5% CPU and like 1.5GB of RAM used.

- I tried various settings for the "max_heartbeats_per_second" setting like (30, 100, 120, 240, 60) - no change at all..

- I also tried stopping all other services on the server (webhosting, other gameserver) without any improvement..

- I also disabled the server firewall for testing but also no improvement there..

So I wonder what the problem could be..

I'd don't see anything that suggests lagging, can you explain in detail what it feels like and when it happens?

While walking over the map it feels smooth and in the next moment you are increasingly slowed down with stuttering in the movement (FPS stay at ~ 60).
Sometimes it happens just a little, but sometimes it slows you down till it stops you from moving for something like a second after that the game continues smooth for some time (seconds) until it happens again.

Same on the map-view when zoomed out, like everything where the view is moved.

Feels like the game can not render the view fast enough and locks up..

I have a similar performance problem (I'm using headless server on ubuntu 18.04, E5-2698v3, 128G RAM, 50Mbps Uploads), check the FPS/UPS on the client, its always 60/60, but the character cannot move smoothy and everything just slow down. Save the map and create server at local client will be very smoothy, everything is ok :D

And I found that if there are more players online, the problem will be more serious. Is this a clients-server sync problem or something? Looks like a player who has bad network environment join the server will slow all player down.
