[1.1.59] [Linux] Factorio doesn't start even up to creating a log file

Upon clicking on the Steam "Play" button a window for "Synchronising Steam cloud" pops up and promptly disappears. The game stops there (i.e the Steam button turns from "Stop" to "Play" again).

The cloud synchronisation seems to succeed as there are saves in the ~/.factorio folder but that's all that's there. No log gets generated. I've searched my entire system for "factorio-current" and it does not come up with anything.

I do not use any mods.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try restarting your machine if you haven't yet.
