Burner Inserter won't pull coal from a conveyor belt - help?!

I'm on the Linux build of the Factorio demo, on level 2.
The burner inserter here isn't pulling coal from the conveyor belt, instead it's saying "Waiting for source items" in the interface. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug? I just started playing so it's probably the former.

Miner has buffer limit, inserter too. That's normal

While vjbone is correct as to what is happening, the fact that the inserter is displaying that specific message instead of the "Waiting for space in destination" message like it does in most other situations I would consider a bug. I just submitted a report. See viewtopic.php?f=7&t=102225
