Yellow inserters won’t insert iron ore if furnace and belt are full of coal
When my furnace has 50 coal in it and there’s coal on the transport belt, it won’t insert the iron ore that’s also there. Not sure if bug or feature.

Is the inserter currently holding coal? If you manually filled the furnace fuel slot while it was picking up coal, it won't have anywhere to put it down. You'll have to remove the coal from the inserter's inventory manually.

Or remove the Coal from the Furnace so the Inserter can have some place to deposit the Coal it has in hand.
Personally, having run into that issue multiple times myself, I make it a habit to insert half stacks rather than full stacks when using furnace columns to drop off excess coal or smeltables.
