Biters using themselves as landfill

I think the mud water tile is crossable by biters. If with your other suggestion re: mineable beach tiles, if the water tile that gets placed in its place is this mud water tile, that could solve the issue you sought to solve with this one.

That said, I don’t see this suggestion as a bad one either. I’d be ok with it. It’d help make mods that add placeable water tiles not so OP.

I know it's not the suggestion, but there is this mod https://mods.factorio.com/mod/Noxys_Swimming

It allows you and the biters to swim, not just little river, all the water, without requiring to make a bridge first.

The only terrain that can help your defend is cliff, which biters can't climb.

Together with this other mod https://mods.factorio.com/mod/islands_world you are set for a very unique gameplay
