The feature recently introduced in 1.1, where belts are locked into a straight line, and even more recently, where you place your cursor somewhere to the side of the belt, and press R to automatically place towards your cursor, could actually work in a more intuitive way:
You hold CTRL (or any other convenient hotkey), and the placement of belts will be locked in the direction of the belt.
If you place you cursor to the side, instead of pressing R, you release CTRL.
This could be also implemented to power poles.
This is in line with what people intuitively do in many drawing apps (try in mspaint: use a pencil, hold shift!), and I feel like it would match the theme of 1.1.
Locking belt placement in a line in a more convenient way

I see two disadvantages:
- you need to hold down an extra key while running the whole time
- I fear you are much too late to change that in vanilla
I think this is a good mod idea, especially because it covers the poles.

Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.
