[1.1.6] Error on mac "factorio.app can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software"

When trying to run factorio on Mac Pro 2019 with macOS 11.1. (Big Sur), I'm getting error: "“factorio.app” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.". I cannot bypass the Apple Gatekeeper check in settings as the laptop is also used for work and is required to be on at all times.
It seems this was already solved here: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=62112&p=376133&hil ... us#p376133, but still happens for me.

Hello,
I am sorry you have trouble running Factorio on macOS. However version 1.1.6, both standalone and steam builds, are notarized, which means Apple has already checked it for malicious software. I have no idea why your mac claims otherwise. Is it connected to the internet when you try to run the game?

Hi, thanks for your reply. It is indeed connected and I can download and play other games through Steam. The problem occurs with both standalone and Steam version (although Steam one behaves a bit different - it seems to be unable to finish downloading - stuck at 99%). I've tried clear the downloads in Steam, reinstall it, change the Steam download servers, and obviously restarted the whole system. No luck so far.

Are you sure you downloaded it from factorio.com? Because it is most definitely notarized on my Mac (wouldn't run otherwise). Open the info box on the .dmg, and check the "More Info" tab.

Have you tried right click -> open. It somewhat bypasses security checks like this over double click.

Hi

I know this is a long time off topic, but I found a solution!

You were probably trying to run the game from an application on a virtual drive - I had the same error trying that way
Move Factorio (from the virtual drive) to your desktop and try to play from there - the game loads faster and without any errors
