Re: Factorio, Unpowered Warnings and Epilepsy

Post by hoylemd »

I'm not epileptic myself, but I'd welcome any mod or even official support for this. I play most games with a lot of accessibility features on because they just feel better. I think it's because they let me interact with the game on my own terms, no matter the reason for those terms.

+1 for a setting to turn the flashing off.
When designing complex assembling lines, it can get very distracting/stressful

I'll try the no_power_icons mod for now.

Option for warning signs to be static and not blink

Post by imTheSupremeOne »

It was always an issue for me, but last time, I got tired after spending a lot of time building my base with many unpowered entities, and I still had things to think, and this time this constant blinking of many things was really bad and interruptive. But I still were playing and trying to think about things, until I started to feel nauseated and bad... And I didn't even played for that long...

It was probably like trying to read this post with that video below ↓

I don't know for what extent, but I believe that many people can have problem with blinking, and it would be cool if there could be option to turn it off...

[Koub] Merged a few topics with the same suggestion.
Note : there are also suggestions to have different behaviour when entities are unpowered because of a power switch.

Option to toggle flashing icons?

Post by ShiveringSun »

Like power and fuel. They are critical when needed but annoying when not.

Even beyond annoying... it can't be good for our brains to see that too much. Certainly can cause discomfort for me, and even a feeling close to dizziness when happening in a large area and observed for too long. I am not sensitive to flashing lights in general and have no history of epilepsy or similar. There are so many cool options and features in this game but searching shows this may have been omitted. :(

Thanks for linking that mod. If necessary, I'll use it.

I don't want to lose access to this feature though. Hopefully it's possible for a hotkey toggle sometime in the future.

I also really would like to have the option, to remove flashing effect or to lower the opacity of the flashing icon, in base game via settings
This idea is older, maybe i find the link to it
EDIT: Here

Thank you again. Some good ideas for solving this in that thread.

My experience and common sense suggest most people have a finite threshold for tolerating flashing/blinking lights, even to the extent that having zero intolerance is the exception.

The mods to help with the flashing are not very useful.
We really need some support from the Developers in this.
We need the option to disable completely All flashing icons in the game and also disable the flashing notiifcations in the UI.

There's (limited) built-in colour-blindness support now. So maybe epilepsy could be next (or at least better moddability for the blinking).

What more moddability we need? As said earlier in thread there is a mod that removes warnings, and mods are able to make every texture fully transparent and 1 pixel size, if not other ways nonexistent.

The blinking warnings are useful Info, which should not be completely hidden. Just the blinking itself can be really straining

As @jodokus31 also says, completely hiding them completely defeats the point. I just don't like the blinking and would prefer them to be static images.

Ideally we'd get an indicator light on machinery like the new mining drills have.
Green: operating normal
Red: missing ingredient or output full
Yellow: no power

Yellow as no output is better.
it is too helpful to distinguish in and out problems.

Why not blue as off because of no power?

Because green and red are already used like this in the normal gui.

Hm. Really. That is bad.

As I see "no input" is "starving", while "no output" is "done".

But that is dev's design, ofc.
