Add ability to run headless server in 'Light' mode

Ideas that are too old (too many things have changed since) and ones which won't be implemented for certain reasons or if there are obviously better suggestions.

Add ability to run headless server in 'Light' mode

Post by Ocnathor »

I am unsure if this functionality would be easily added, however

It would be usefull if it were possible to run a factorio server, that didn't actually run the save like normal, but simply hosted the file, and was able to pass said save to the first user to connect to it, and then direct further clients to connect to that inital user as the host.

Currently I have maps running with friends that have been running for a few months on and off, however rather then paying $$ for good hosting, we simply use one person consistently as the host for a save, OR cloud storage to pass the save around.

Being able to use a version of the factorio server that could manage that for us would be very conveniant, and idealy could run on almost any hardware/virtual provided it had enough storage for the full save.

you could just use a file sharing service.

Yeah, you describe the “light mode” just as file share.

Better reasons, why this might be useful? Why do I need a running Factorio server for that?
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

You are correct, it is essentialy just a file share.

The point would be to automate the process, and allow users to do it through the factorio client, rather then having to copy files around outside the game.

I'm gonna go ahead and move this to "Won't implement" as I don't think it is likely to ever happen.
