For one of the stone furnaces the contents overlay is not appearing:

Hello, it's not contents overlay (though the overlay displays contents for some types of objects). For crafting machines it shows current recipe. While recipe is fixed for assemblers, it is dynamic for furnaces and depends on input items. So when furnace does have empty input, it doesn't have any recipe set.

Yes, it is a bit confusing to have the contents of chests displayed the same way. Thanks!
