STEAM SUPERHEATER

Post by varundevan »

hi,

this topic might have been discussed earlier with a different title.
the nuclear setup has its own challenges and beauty to it as it has many real world factors built in to it.
but the steam engine , kind of less interesting.
my suggestion is to include a item called a "super heater" which super heats steam to higher temperature.
this would make the steam set up bit more interesting and the turbines can be used with it.

the steam set up is made simple and does not much research has been put into it as nuclear power set up in the game (IMO).
There are items like steam superheater, regenerator , reheater and many other techniques in a Thermal power plant (big topic), to increase efficiency.

suggestions are welcome.

I need to look more into the balancing board...
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

I miss the old boilers.

It required some tweeking when setting it up and the ratio was a little off.
The system was far more complex.

Now its just one boiler and two steam engines and everything matches perfectly.

A nuclear setup is more complex.
I guess the game needs a simple way to produce power for the start.

i think the current steam setup is simple enough for the start
and i wrote this post, to indicate that steam is less complex and it can have more complexity as the game progresses

I miss old boilers too. And fluids water = steam.
Now there is no way to get steam lower than 165 degrees.

I have the impression that heating steam in this game is purposely simplified. We start with the coal-burning boilers to create 165 degree steam that powers the steam engines. We all know that... but the usual progression next step is to feed those same boilers solid fuel from converting the oil into solid fuel. Instead of having to use a different "oil powered boiler" to create steam we just feed the burner boiler solid fuel. The steam doesn't get any hotter, the solid fuel lasts longer instead. Then I would think most would foray into solar power... no use for steam there. Then, a return to steam but a hotter steam (500 vs 165) to turn the turbines. Which could only be produced by heat exchangers attached to nuclear reactors.

So are you looking to short-cut the nuclear plant building process by adding some super-heater to the game that could produce the 500 degree steam that turbines need? Technology for super-heating anything is very limited, I don't know of any that do not cost more power than the heat it produces (i.e. lasers).

I suppose you cold harness a volcano, but that seems to be a bit too fantastic for this game. But along those lines, instead of a super-heater to complicate steam, I'd rather see the options to build alternative power systems like wind power... and biters on a treadmill maybe?

It'd be neat if feeding better fuel into boilers got you hotter steam, which engines and turbines could use to generate scaling power. Coal would give you the current temperature steam, wood less, solid fuel more -- this would be where engines would cap out --, rocket fuel more still, and nuclear fuel would get you 500C steam outta a boiler, and consequently the ability to drive a turbine at full capacity :D

Fun fact:
Nuclear power plants usually run on steam colder than 300°C
Coal power plants can handle up to 500°C hot steam.

The game supports a basic setup for steam. There are some mods, that enable a much more complex handling, especially when we talk about nuclear power.

There are mods for anything. That's not really relevant.

Maybe with https://mods.factorio.com/mod/SteamCooling and https://mods.factorio.com/mod/H2O
