Fails to reach authentication servers

I recently bought the game for me and a friend directly through steam not steam keys. we have been playing for about 5 days now had no problems but as of yesterday my friend is meet with fails to reach authentication servers error meaning we cant play together online. I have attempted to reach support via their email and steam with no help any ideas this game is great and is slowly losing its luster for us each day that we cant play.
