Automation Research not progressing?

Hi. New player so probably a very simple answer.
What do i need to to get the Automation Research to start, i assumed i just needed to craft enough red science packs but that doesn't seem to have done it?

Handcraft 10 red science packs, insert them into a science lab you have previously built and powered (with a wooden power pole, an offshore pump, a coal fed burner, and a steam engine).

Putting science into labs is kind of the whole point of the game. Besides the rocket it's the main resource sink. And the point of the rocket is to get space science

Yep, just craft a lab, supply it with power (probably from a steam engine/boiler setup), and put in your packs.
