In-Game compendium/codex/cheatsheet

Post by invisus »

One thing I've been wondering about while playing, is the frequent need to dip out of game to some external resource.

Would there be anyway to export or include a version of https://factoriocheatsheet.com/ or https://wiki.factorio.com/ into a mod so it's browsable in-game?

The size of the cheatsheet kind of lends itself nicely to this, but I was wondering if anyone had any want for the same. Or, is everyone else content in alt-tabbing to external resources as just another part of the game?

Some mods allow you to do that kind of planning:
  • Helmod
  • Factory Planner
  • FNEI
immediately come to mind

Don't for get the new shiny Recipe Book by Raiguard. ;)

Yeah, I'm aware of these kinds of mods. I suppose I'm thinking about a broader set of information beyond what these specific mods provide.

Factoriocheatsheet for example... there is a HEAP of useful tips/tricks, examples and general concepts that just aren't covered by these mods alone.

I suppose I'm also wondering about filling some of the gaps currently in the game along these lines. And now that an official campaign isn't on the map for v1.0, what other avenue is there for helping along new players? Specifically, in game resources.

The problem is maintenance, and languages, and maintenance of the languages.

An earlier version of one of my mods had a primitive "tips" feature that pinged helpful differences between the mod and vanilla at you as a chat message, once every so often. These were single sentences. They were in a locale, so other modders could translate them into any language.

I've been tinkering with upgrading that to a searchable gui now that we can access the content of locally-translated strings.

This uses the same localised (multi-language) table of strings, though I've expanded them now that I'm no longer confined to a single line of text. I may do some more work on organising the content, or I may not, it's a lot of effort for practically zero reward, if I'm honest.

Anyway, if you play in Steam, there's shift-TAB and the Steam browser can go to the wiki, if you like using slower, laggier browsers. But you may as well alt-TAB to a proper browser.

I think the official view stated by the developers is that it'd be a monumental effort, plagued with out of date info that would need updating or can be easily made inaccurate by mods, to replicate a web-based help resource like the official wiki within the game, and there's no point in doing it just to cater to a handful of people's aversion to leaving the game for a moment or two. Completely understable view in my opinion.

Those are certainly some valid points. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.

As to the tips from your mod... these are the kinds of short one-liner tips that I always saw coming from clippy...err... compilatron as he follows the engineer around the factory.
