The field is fragmented. But the nearest neighbor doesn't count too. The selected miner has 2,9K left. The neighbor under it 3K. But the result is still 2,9K at the circuit. How many space between the ore patches are allowed? How many tiles? Are two empty tiles enough for the function to stop?

The Map count it as one field! All the ore patches are highlighted with the white color.
Ok. But in my honest opinion this function doesn't make sense, if it is no gap allowed. A 50 Million field is by and by fragmented. If u want to read all the real ore left, u have to connect all the miners in the current build with the data cable? Right? So, if this is the truth, for what is the "whole patch" function, if it doesn't make, what it was made for? It doesn't work, if u have a gap tolerance of zero between them. And each field has this after several hours. Each miner works from the outer to the inner. Wasn't the intention to read the whole field, that u don't have to connect all the miners with a data cable?
The "whole patch" is recorded at the time you check the setting and is remembered for the duration that the drill exists regardless of what gaps show up after it's enabled.
