If you have no FSK rating in Germany it is considered 18+.

What people mean when they say "violence" is often "gore". I wish the latter was used more to specifically delineate what is being concerned, instead of lumping that under the much more broad "violence".
It's not spaghetti!

Obviously factorio is 30+ and must be virgin, as only wizards can handle this game.

I'd say 7-9 years old, you can go even younger if you want. This game doesn't have any major violence(Except maybe showing kids how to launch mass atomic bombs at bugs), but there are the whole biters dying which can be turned off if you just want to play trains and factories with younger people.

It would probably be interesting for some younger people to check it out, and show how if you take your basic materials you can make processes. I'm guessing later in life this could come in use when learning to program or even just playing another efficiency based game

13 years old?
When I was 13 years old, I was playing Age of Empire 1, where i think it is much more violent than Factorio, the blood was red, and soldiers would scream in dying, and become white bones.

The only concern is whether the boy is patient enough to play till launching a rocket.

I guess that as long as nobody makes popular a mod drawing jewish stars over spawners so that you have to claim Lebensraum from the vermin to get to the Ostern oil fields, we'll be fine...
I like to call Factorio a truly american game - but replace north america with europe, indians with jews and you are at WWII.
The concept is universal and humans are really good at it. We have ethics and conscience but at the same time also the ability to easily turn both off by finding any way to rationalize the necessity of what both would prevent us to do otherwise.
It all depends on who is the invader and that depends on who the land is considered to belong to - which is open to interpretation in many cases; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of ... l_disputes

In the end, all life exist at the expense of other life. A tree growing in a spot of land means other plants can’t grow there.

TC, tell your friend’s parents to get off their butts and do their research. Rating systems are not enough, parents should be looking into what their kids are doing beyond “someone else says its ok” or “someone else says its not ok”.

Those ratings systems are a manifestation of the abrogation of parental diligence, and they perpetuate it at the same time. Stop the cycle. A parent’s ONLY job is the proper care and upbringing of the children. This does not stop at “someone else says this game is ok for an X year old” - it means personal investigation of the game (or whatever the object of the kid’s desire may be) and making an informed decision. Ratings systems may be used, but only as one data point among as many as the parent can get.

Is it “rationalization” when it’s a fact?

All life competes for limited resources. The ones that prevail continue to reproduce. The ones that don’t die out.

E.g. When a tree dies, an opening in the canopy opens up. Young trees then compete to reach the canopy first. The losers die from lack of sunlight.

So... Girls can't play Factorio if I read you carefully.

You obviously didn't read the whole thread. That's the original post:

I showed factorio to a friend of mine, and now we want to play together. However his mum [emphasis mine] really wants to know how old you have to be to play it (my friend is 13). If I could just have a semi-official answer to satisfy her and let him play, that would be enough.
So, this advice was for a very specific case where, indeed, only a boy was concerned. No reason to deduce that anybody was saying this game can't be played by girls …
A good mod deserves a good changelog. Here's a tutorial (WIP) about Factorio's way too strict changelog syntax!

We are sentient beings. We are able to control our instincts and therefore we are able to control the future resource demand of our civilisation - so that genocide is never inevitable.
Constructing an excuse for it (whether abusing facts for it or not) is therefore indeed rationalization.

Factorio is probably the best game out there to teach, why genocides happend. It lets the player experience the point of view of an invader without being in-your-face about it.
Factorio is fun and most players never feel like doing anything morally bad while playing. That most likely is exactly, how being a conqueror feels like in real life too.

Unfortunately, the results of our attempts at population control have, more often than not, been less than encouraging.

Not to mention given a choice to save a human being or several of some other animal, we will always choose the former.

We clear land to settle, wiping out entire colonies of whatever was there before.

We don't feel bad because they are bugs.

We kill ants and cockroaches by the millions everyday.

Yes, we are humans.

Exactly. That is incredibly good game design.

Yes I did, 6 months ago. I admit I didn't bother to read back OP thinking this was just a mindless thread resurrection. My bad.
