Ore burners making coal

Weirdness with burner miners...

Start a new random free play game - build first burner miner on ore deposit - 2.2k ore expected - fuel with hand-dug coal.
Add burner inserter to remove iron ore from the miner, add coal to power, and add wooden box.

Coal appears in the wooden box...
Take out coal and put into miner as fuel.
Miner info shows iron ore output.
Coal reappears in the box...

You need to add 1 extra space so the inserter does not touch the mining drill.

Or 1 less space so the wooden box DOES touch the mining drill.

Not sure if magic or just the burner inserter stealing fuel from the miner.

The burner stuff can leech fuel from each other. That is normal and has its uses. You don't need the inserter. The miner can put ore directly into boxes. Or better yet directly into a furnance!

The usual way to start is to set up burner miners on coal fueling each other like this:

That can be changed to 6 or 8 miners eventually, which gives you plenty of coal. You can then pick up that coal manually and put it into burner miner / furnace combos

Yeah. Unlike most other machines, miners cannot have their product removed by inserters, rather they directly output onto a tile or whatever is there. For burner miners, inserters add or remove the *fuel*. So in your case the miner is trying to deposit ore onto the inserter's base, not its pickup point, which doesn't work. Meanwhile the inserter is removing the fuel from the miner.
