So that pressing E or T closes the window instead of starting a search.

If I'm not mistaken, that input isn't active even now after opening it. And you still have to click into it in order to write.

It definitely focuses the text box here whether you click the button or press Ctrl-F.

Suggestion: Make search field in research GUI visible and non-focussed by default.
