Post by berkuma »

Need some help with this problem...have tried following but none worked.
1) uninstall/install multiple times
2) tried solutions in the following thread (delete crop-cache.dat or everything in %Appdata%\factorio\), didn't work
viewtopic.php?t=54543
3) tried the newest beta, also crashed at start.

The crash happens inside tier0_s64.dll which is a DLL from Steam. I don't know what it does, but maybe disabling Steam Overlay would workaround the crash. Do other Steam games work well for you?

It is also interesting the crash is not recorded in our log. This usually happens when some third party application injects its DLLs into the game and overrides crash handling routines.

Can you please download Procdump.zip
Unzip it, run dump_on_exception.bat, confirm Microsoft's EULA and then launch Factorio through Steam (don't run Factorio.exe directly). It should create Factorio.exe_######_######.dmp. Zip the dmp file and upload it here, please.

Procdump.zip contains ProcDump from Microsoft Sysinternals (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sys ... 96900.aspx) and bat files to run procdump with parameters that make it create memory dump when Factorio.exe crashes or terminates.

Hey and sorry about the late reply!

So I got Procdump, and ran Factorio through stream with the process running.

And somehow (......) the game starts fine when Procdump is running... (doesn't crash after 3hr of play)

One exception was recorded now, but it doesn't trigger crash & does not produce a dump.

Now, the game did crash when I try to start it without Procdump running, but I can't get a dump for this behavior...

This probably makes it quite hard to debug, and sorry for having no good way to reproduce :/
At least now the game does run, although under a very strange condition, plz feel free to close this if it seems too burdening...

Hate to post in such an old thread, but I'm having presumably the same problem, with the exact same "workaround".

Definitely seems to be a problem with the Steam version, as the demo was running absolutely fine for me, and the crash isn't present in the Factorio log. The only meaningful commonality I can see between my setup and OP's is that we're both running Windows 7, albeit theirs is an older build.

On mine, procdump picks up an exception (406D1388) several times when loading, as well as when going from the main menu into a map, but I couldn't tell you what it means. Manually terminating procdump with ctrl+c causes Factorio to instantly crash, and neither closing Factorio manually nor terminating procdump will generate a dump file. "dump_on_terminate.bat" does generate a dump file, but with that one, the exception I saw no longer shows up, so I don't know if it'll be of any use.

Running procdump seems to function as a workaround of sorts, but I also discovered, after creating a Factorio.com account and linking my Steam, that I can just use the standalone version, which avoids the issue entirely, and I didn't care about any Steam integration anyway.
