Better Steam integration

Post by Samuel1 »

Factorio moves onto the 1.0.0 release, but still Factorio is hardly integrated into Steam. It's almost like Factorio only uses Steam as a launcher. There is a button to join someone's game in Steam's friend section, but when I or my friends tried to use it, it never did anything and we had to tell eachother the exact name of the server which seems like an unneccessary hassle.

Furthermore it is extremely fiddly to get all your mods to match up with a friend. I propose to you use the Steam workshop, you could look through and share mods and mod collections, even when you're not in-game. Also you wouldn't have to remember to check, if there are any updates for mods, since Steam would automatically update mods. Also modders could show off their mods better with pictures, videos and longer explanations compared to the tiny text you get in the mod tab.
Yes, there is a link to a forum page and a link to the mod's mod-portal-page and modders can explain their mods there. However IMO Steam workshop would be more convenient because you don't have to handle as many windows as with the mod portal. With the current state you click on a mod in the in-game mod browser, want to learn more about a mod and you have to got to your internet browser. If you like the mod, you'll have to go back to the game and download it there. This seems unneccessarily complicated to me at least.

Edit: TL;DR make joining friends easier via Steam and use the steam workshop for mods
