[Twinsen]Conversion from 0.16 to 0.17 - Laser power
When I load my 0.16 savegame in 0.17 game, then it gets converted to the new science tree.
Unfortunately, it converts Laser Power level 16 (Which gives a laser turret 20+172 damage)
to Energy Weapon 7 and leaves the laser turrets with only 20+60 laser damage.
Biters are really happy to crack down my wall in minutes, and there's really nothing I can do against it in time.

Yeah, I had the same problem. In the end I gave up and enabled peaceful mode.

Granted, you'll loose achievements, but you could enable peaceful mode in order to buy time to rework science, research laser damage, and build up defenses. Then disable peaceful mode once more.
But as far as being bothered by this... it's the price one pays for being able to play an "experimental" branch of an alpha game. I think Wube keeps things so stable and fixes issues quickly enough that people forget about this small tidbit sometimes.

lol i have yellow ammo and laser turret with level 2 damage research and sit comfy at 100% evolution. you are doing something terribly wrong

It really depends on several more factors than evolution, like difficulty level and pollution output. When I load my .16 save game, it takes merely a few seconds before the first defence posts start to fall (about 20 turrets each, including repair bot coverage), and before I reached the first ruins, several others have fallen. I didn't intend to continue that game, but that save would be pretty much ruined anyway.

Impacted me as well, I believe more than just laser power, I think I had all my miners at 200% and that looks to be reset as well..

Factorio should include a migration script setting energy-weapons-damage to roughly match pre 0.17 laser-turret-damage similar to how mining productivity is migrated.
If you went for pure laser defense you are very screwed in death worlds.
The non cheating option is to go back to 0.16 and replace ~half of your laser turrets with gun turrets so you have defense while teching back up.
The alternative would be to use console to unlock laser damage to previous level.

Probably somthing like
Where 16 is whatever your previous level was. But the command will disable achievements.
This migration will give you a bit of a boost in damage.
