My suggestion: When the biters attack the first base, where the broken ship and the ship reactor is, the reactor should explode just like the nukes in freeplay when the reactor is destroyed.
As in, the first wave of biters attacks the remaining ship parts and the reactor. When the reactor's health hits zero, the nuclear explosion animation and sound occurs. The blastwave kills the wave of biters and any remaining structures. Another wave of biters then comes in to set up the biter base.
Reasons for my suggestion:
* Would look great and be a set piece/dynamic cool moment for the player.
* Showcases the explosion art and sound
* Shows that biters can be killed, but that more will come
* Demonstrates the power that the ship reactor had, and reinforces the progression of technology in freeplay from steam power back to nuclear power
* Makes the player think about using such explosions in the future as weapons against the biters

We actually tried this is a previous version. However, during focus testing many players wanted to return to the site, as it was now biter free.
The biters setting up bases had a 100% success rate of getting the player to move on
Dont worry about explosions, the full length campaign will have some very big ones.
