Logistics

Post by Waffledragon122 »

So firstly, im not sure if this is the place im supposed to put this, because its in the support section, but since this thread (looked like it) didn't have to do with the inner workings of the game, i figured this is where you can ask questions, now when i got robots i had this great idea, what if i could just have robots delivering to all the assembly machines i need, no more belts needed, so i promptly made inserters into provider chests basically made most resources go into provider chests and stuff, thinking i could probably easily get this working, boy was i wrong, after all that, i soon had absolutely no idea what to do then... so if this is possible, then i want to know how to do it, if not, then i have no idea what im gonna do now, obviously ill have to restore everything but, i would prefer to just have things work this way, or even be able to connect assembling machines to logistics networks and just have robots automatically deliver to them

You need :
1) to resrearch https://wiki.factorio.com/Logistic_robotics_(research) and https://wiki.factorio.com/Logistic_system_(research)
2) to place https://wiki.factorio.com/Passive_provider_chest or https://wiki.factorio.com/Active_provider_chest where you output your assembling machines' production
3) to place https://wiki.factorio.com/Requester_chest to request what your assembling machines need to produce
4) to place roboports everywhere
5) to build enough https://wiki.factorio.com/Logistic_robot to fit the demand.

Keep in mind that robots solve the throughput issue with belts. But they aren't meant for long distance travel. Very low volume you can fly around a long way. But for mass production you need to have the roboports next to the assemblers. Which means your materials still need to get there. So if it's not belts you need to unload ingredients from trains to passive provider chests. And then use logistics bots to move from provider to requester chests. And the reverse for the finished product.
Or at least for example produce green circuits next to red circuits to keep the flight distance short. Direct insertion is also nice here where it makes sense ratio-wise

Don't use active provider chests. Those are actively emptied all the time instead of the stuff just sitting in a passive provider chests waiting until it's needed. There are only a few uses for those

Maybe start smaller first and use the logistics network to supply yourself with items
