I was hosting a multiplayer game, about 10 hours in, maybe 15 players over the course of the game, one other player at the time of freeze. After a minute of the freeze, I force closed the game and restarted. I loaded the last autosave, and there was no GUI at all. ESC menu still worked. I loaded the previous autosave and all was well with the GUI. I can't think of anything in particular we were doing when the game froze. Sorry.
