I agree on using orbital waste disposal systems. Trash disposal is a space science.

No item beyond the early game is "obsolete".
It makes no sense to gate an official trash bin behind a rocket.
It makes no sense to have specific recycling buildings or recipes just for those couple of wooden chests and poles.

Exactly.
I just dont like shooting chests. Managing waste is core of my gameplay. I must deal with it and keep the archive as small as possible.
I feel bad for every burner miner, iron chest etc. I produce.
It insentivises me to rush steel science now for for both poles and chests.:s
Since there is no vanilla use for obsolete items (use as wall is a edge case imho), some easter eggs like we had in .16 were more then welcome. Technically you process your fuel further , which could be rewarded due to added complexity.
I lack understanding why removing, when adjusting fuel values/moduling could to reach the same goal much better.

I believe that this discussion simply ends in asking for a void chest/"trash can" that one could build out of basic materials that just voids whatever goes into it. This would also solve the problem of too much wood or other nonsense collecting in your logistics storage. It would be similar to how splitters were given selective ratios and filters via GUI, simplifying an existing "feature" and making it feel more genuine. People will do it anyway, so why not make it a user friendly feature?
Or if automating the voiding of items is too OP since logistics of waste products are also important to the game, a void slot in the inventory would serve as a less convoluted manual method than plopping down a chest and shooting it.

(And both of them provide void buildings - though not for all items in the case of Angels.)

Items don't suddenly turn bad. Players simply don't want to use them any more. The big issue with voiding items is that you can basically automate a giant hole. For example players sometimes make a mistake and fill their network with barrels. If barrels could be voided, that same mistake would have players making barrels and smashing them as an endless loop. I think it's good that those types of death traps don't exist. It's better off that players make an active choose to destroy items and aren't able to automate hurting themselves.
But you can still automate it. Just throw requester chests on your rocket silo. Bad items get automatically launched and you never see them again. The void tech is there, it simply exists at the END of the tech tree!

Kinda surprised no one made a mod to bring back that behavior. Or did I not find it? Or is it not even possible to mod that?

I am was very surprised finding this point in change list of 0.17: "Chests and wooden power poles are no longer usable as fuel." I have no found any explaining why it was have to do, only reason that I found it is possible problems with burner efficiency, but its not really convincingly. I'll be very happy, if devs will bring this aspect back, it was one of the most funny thing that I found in this game so far. Will be very sadly if new players will not feel such emotions as I was.

Just put a grinder building into the game. It costs some gears and iron, and just destroys items inserted into it.

This was allegedly done to shorten the list of stuff shown in the fuel/burnables tooltips to avoid confusing new players according to kovarex. Personally I like the change. Allows me to use ctrl+click to refuel buildings as previously it would prefer to put wooden chests in. I find this helps during the early game where I am using wooden chests and manually fueling miners & smelters.
I also don't burn wooden chests as they are the easiest chest to destroy and get rid of the unwanted items.
