When new players have the ability to ignore crafting prerequisites I think they are ill-prepared going forward.

Would also make it easier to notice your supply of chips/gears is empty, once you have those automated but hand-craft things that require them.

this would just be annoying and prolong the starter phase.
If i understand you right, you want players to first craft all copper cables and only then will they be able to handcraft green chips?
Whats actually annoying about handcrafting and teaching you to automate, is the fact that you wait forever to have your handcraft queue finish, where you could just run to a box and pickup stuff that you automated earlier.

If anyone ever wondered if they could handcraft-only their way to the rocket, i think the first "roadblock" comes soon enough with the introduction of engines being "assembler only"
