How do you calculate Pollution rates?

Post by JekoRhino »

I tried to mod Electric Furnaces with Productivity 2 and got some wired Numbers...

Pollution on Electric Furnaces is 0.9

Adding Productivity 1 * 2 that's +5% Pollution * 2 = +10% Pollution
0.9 + 10% = 0.99 Pollution

Adding Productivity 2 * 2 thats' +7% Pollution * 2 = +14% Pollution
0.9 + 14% = 1.024 Pollution

but I get 1.782 Pollution with Productivity 1 and 2.2572 Pollution with Productivity 2

What is there an easy explanation?

I just tried the same thing with Speed Modules and they add no Pollution but 60% Energy consumption and the same thing happend.
But now It makes more sense. 0.9 + 120% = 1.98 and 1.98 just happens to be the Pollution rate you get with 2 Speed modules.

But why is that?
Why not just say +60% Pollution(for Speed 2) or 75% Pollution(for Productivity 2)
That would make more sense.

productivity modules add pollution + energy consumption. The increased energy consumption means the machine also produces more pollution.

That'll be 40% for Productivity 1 and 60%of Productivity 2.

0.9 + 10% + 80% = 1.782 Pollution

0.9 + 14% + 120% = 2.2572 Pollution

Ok I get it now... :v
But it makes everything harder to be eco friendly.
I tried to be nice to the Biters but there seems to be not other option other than Efficiency module everything or kill them.

Did I get anything wrong or ARE the critters the pollution sink?

The pollution sink are :
The soil
The trees
The spawners

Not the actual critters.

Even that won't help for long. Best to just up ammo everything as soon as possible. Get a border wall in place.

My current map, i placed a perimeter wall with hand fed turrets. Yellow ammo. Lasted quiet some time as i was able to run a belt out to the edge.

Later, as this was a heavy on water map, i started making chokepoint walls. These are self contained laser walls with solar and accumulators.
"No! This one goes there! That one goes There! Right?!"

I found that some descriptions aren't...descriptive.

The pollution rating with anything seems to be directly related to it's energy consumption. Speed directly increases energy consumption so you could think of it the same as increasing energy with prod mods.

This is why efficiency modules are so effective for having low pollution values. They go directly after energy consumption.

Pay more attention to the ending values on the machine than the description for the module.

Sinks only work for spawning and not evolution. I've found very few, if any, sinks that really make a difference when keeping pollution to a minimum. Large forests do help quite a bit though. Efficiency modules are the choice to go with if you don't want to be bothered by the local pests.
