Makes sense, although people usually just run in one direction to get straight lines.

It'd actually need a way to constrain the mouse to a line of tiles rather than a set of x/y screen coordinates. That way when we bump into a building while running to drop a straight line our nice straight line continues to go straight. But honestly, for cases like these we have blueprints... so... not certain I want to utilize precious modifier keys when I think there might be much better uses for them that have already been brought up.

It wouldn't have to explicitly be one of the keyboard modifier keys, merely some key being promoted to modify mouse behaviour. And I 100% agree on locking it to map space X/Y as opposed to screen space X/Y.

That's fair. I do like the idea of being able to easily lay a stuff down straight even when maneuvering around buildings.

Hmm, thinking about it, the same feature could offer a simple screen-wide cross-hairs so you can line things up easier to make prettier bases.

I know you can get a grid if you pause the game, but you can't build while paused.

Go into the debug menu (F4) and there should be something along the lines of show-tile-grid.
There are 10 types of people: those who get this joke and those who don't.

How about "Draw a line of buildings(belts, pipes)"? Just like you do a straight line in the any graphical editor.

Bonus points if it slightly snaps to right angles.
