Cliff explosives create craters

TL;DR
Cliff explosives creates craters when not thrown on a cliff.
What ?
Currently the cliff explosives will remove cliffs when thrown on a cliff, when not thrown on a cliff, nothing happens. To blow up a cliff needs a large amount of force. This force should do something when not thrown on a cliff.
Why ?
You could create craters that are easily defendable and the force needed to blow up a cliff does not go to waste when not thrown on a cliff.

While agree with your reasoning can you even throw cliff explosives not on a cliff? Iirc you can only click on cliffs to throw it.

Aside from that: If cliff explosives make a crater then nukes better do too.

Better idea:

Cliff explosives should replace land with water, making it the first and only way of placing water.

I don't need to go into detail as to why or how this is useful.
We all know this would be useful.

Yes, we all know it is would be useful. Unfortunately since biters don't swim, placing water just makes defending your factory trivial, and hence the devs aren't likely to add it to stock.

The devs have said that they would nod give to the player a way to create insurpassable areas, because it would allow unsurpassable defenses without the need to defend against biters.

That's a pretty good point.

Alright, what about just restoring water that has been land-filled?
So errors or mistakes that have been made when filling in water can be corrected without needing to save/reload, which is often not possible anyway if too much time has passed.
The key issue here is that you need water for pumps, and if you make mistakes you cannot fix them.

I do agree that some way to remove landfill that you placed in error wouldn't be as cheaty as spawning water. Personally like a way to either remove landfill, or a way to place pumps/wells in landfilled areas, or have some have something similar to the platforms mod https://mods.factorio.com/mod/platforms available in stock. It just makes it easier to do revisions to things that need lots of water pumps like refineries and nuclear power plants.

atm, there is no way to tell a landfilled area from natural land. This has already been requested before, but there is no evidence the devs are planning to add such a feature.

And have they ever thought about the possibility that it could only be "shallow" water (like a moat) that the biters CAN pass, even though slowed down?

They should create water WHEN thrown on a cliff. And if thrown on water they should create cliffs. Also landfill should create a tinly island but surround it with more water. That would teach the players to not mess with nature.

Maybe they could "dig" craters, that fill with water after few seconds... (yes, i mean we could be able to create water where we want :) )
We could get full-fledged terramoprhing :)
