Well either way, loaders would fill that function (if we go with a 1x1 version instead of those 1x2 placeholder) so instead of asking to change inserters which would break a ton of factories, ask for 1x1 loaders. Then you could pick between far and near easily.

I'm not worried though because thankfully this will never happen. If you want to ruin your game there's plenty of mods to chose from.

bob's adjustable inserters mod is a possible answer. And, it is light weight, only adding graphics for the buttons used in the GUI itself.

Some people think it's a bit too powerful, especially with the 3 tile reach options. Fortunately for those people, you can turn off Long2/More2 research options with limits you to range 2 and 45 degree rotation steps.

Loaders are not -available- in vanilla, at least not without console commands.
