In normal mode, a player standing next to a gate or a car parked next to a gate will open it, as will moving towards it on foot or in the car.

In sandbox mode, gates only open for moving vehicles, not for stationary, presumably because there's no "player" "in" the car? This makes "safe" gated+wired rail crossings via car more dangerous in sandbox mode than in normal mode.

Relatedly, a slow car in sandbox mode can actually get stuck between two gates that are 2 tiles apart (one rail width)!
