Mac OS X 10.9.5 is not supported for 15.40 and beyond, you need to update your OS or roll back to 15.37.

Factorio 0.15.40 and all versions of 0.16 are currently broken on OSX 10.9. 0.15.37 should work. It should be available in Steam beta tab and from https://www.factorio.com/ .
