Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
I did a quick search but could not find a related topic, though I think there probably is one, but anyways...
Due to te fact that rail-tracks can only be placed in 2 space intervals, ( i.e. straight tracks can never overlap), the distance between tracks is always an even amount.
A chest buffer however you make one is always uneven. Inserter --> chest --> inserter (3), Inserter --> chest --> inserter--> chest --> inserter (5).
Making a train to train buffer is therefore not quite possible without some "unintended" stuff.
placing two perpendicular tracks between the two trains, add a wagon, and inserters works.
T->W W W -> T
T->W W W -> T
T->W W W -> T
This also works with cars, and is more space efficient.
The downside is that this can not be blueprinted, and cars and wagons cannot be connected to the circuit network.
Manual placing of cars and wagons is tedious work. And i believe there should be some intended solution.
for now, the best one is to unload in provider chest, and load with requester chests, place a bunch of robot ports around it and just let 1000 logistic robots do the job.
All other solutions: belts / longarmed inserters etc, will not be as efficient as chest to chest, due to stack bonuses .
With the current bots vs belts discussion going on I believe this is one of the areas where the bot solution is currently the only viable one.
I would love that a track could be placed 3 spaces from another track. or that there be something like a MEGA chest, that is 2 spaces wide so inserter - megachest - insterter works.
Love to hear (your/devs) opinions.

Re: Train to train loading.
You can try the Miniloader mod. Both unloader and loader should fit in the 2 tiles.
Or you separate the tracks 8 tiles and use the warehouses mod.
Vanilla style would be track inserter Box inserter Box inserter track.

Re: Train to train loading.
I play vanilla, and I believe it should be possible in vanilla.
Track, inserter, box inserter box inserter track is uneven so no, that wont fit.
as stated in OP spacing between tracks is always an even amount. any solution with stack insterters and chest is uneven..

Two land handed inserters.

Re: Train to train loading.
Thank you.
While true, this is far from optimal:
A stack inserter with capacity bonus 7 can move 12 items per second (chest to chest)
your design has 2 long arms, so make it 6 items per second.
This would still be half as efficient and stack inserter --> car --> stack inserter would be as space efficient.
My point is not that it cannot be done, it can be.
My point is the most optimal solution is not the most desired one. (cars or bots)

Re: Train to train loading.
So the easiest solution is one chest 2x6 (or three 2x2 chests), that can be placed between them. It can have the same item slots amount as cargo wagon for good game performance.
It can be added as mod, why not.

Re: Train to train loading.
That, or vanilla implemented, a 1x2 chest (as suggested in the OP) would provide good solutions for factory recepis that require 2 inserters to feed it to keep up with the factory speed etc..darkfrei wrote:It can be added as mod, why not.
I can see a lot of used for even instead of uneven spacing options!
Re: Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
See viewtopic.php?f=18&t=53839#p315971 and viewtopic.php?f=6&t=53858 . Also there are mods that add 4x4 and 6x6 storage warehouses.

yes, I've stated these solutions in the OP and why I do not like them.
As with the above, I do not want a warehouse. I simply would love to have a 1x2 chest, with circuit connections like the normal ones, which I truly believe vanilla lacks.Zavian wrote:Also there are mods that add 4x4 and 6x6 storage warehouses.
It should not store a massive amount, it should a balanced addition.
1x3 or any other uneven combo can be done with chest-inserter-chest so that would not be so relevant.
Re: Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
I would personally prefer some storage building 2x3. This would really help balancing load/unload stations as well as help different uneven transitions.

Re: Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
2x3 could be done with three times 1x2 chests or two times 1x2 with inserters in between. neither would limit the throughput. Balancing could be done with circuitry.PacifyerGrey wrote:I would personally prefer some storage building 2x3. I'd say a 1x2 chest would be more versatile for general use.
Re: Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
You can do it with diagonal tracks.

? ? not for a train with say 6 wagonsquyxkh wrote:You can do it with diagonal tracks.
Re: Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
The diagonal tracks is beautiful. How could I not come up with that idea. Now I have to build a megabase without neither bots and belts so Kovarex have to nerf inserters to.

although I'm surprised by the beauty of it , I'd love a little more throughputquyxkh wrote:

Re: Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
You can fit at least 4 stack inserters between the wagons that is 27.7 * 4 items/s = 110.8 item/s that is quite deasentWackerstamfer wrote:although I'm surprised by the beauty of it , I'd love a little more throughputquyxkh wrote:

I think better than 1x2 chests are longhanded stack inserters.
Because there are more use cases for other situations.

Re: Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
Sure that would work for me
Re: Train to train loading --> bigger chests (1x2)
1x2 chest is really wanted for me too.
i believe cargo to cargo assembling is most effective method for UPS. like below:
i love cargo to cargo like this
if 1x2 chest available then it is maybe get better.
now it is 8 beacons to each assembling machine, but 1x2 chest gives more UPS care and more throughput by 10 beacons.
as Mr. Wackerstamfer said, also i'm talking now, things like a above also works with cars.
but cars has many issue. can't be blueprinted, can't be connect to circuit network, manual placing is tedious...
in addition, cars can't be placing to 1xN groove while moving by WASD keys in "sometimes" ( sometimes means skipping my aim when placing. i can't say well... other items like a inserters, chests, are always can be placing to 1xN groove while moving. i guess it issue happen in "sometimes" because cars can placing to small space less than 1xN )
and cars inventory can't be smaller like a chest using red X mark, so cars to be excessive buffer in anytime.
and cars can't be remove by construction robots.....
1x2 chest is wipe out many issues for cargo to cargo (or track to track)
1x2 chest very very wanted.
1x2 chest may have already exists in some MODs, but i hope 1x2 chest to be included in vanilla.
i'm sorry if guys can't understand what i say, it because i've just started learning English.
