Need help, which mods to get

Hello!

I am a veteran player, running the space extension mod, (so far) to give the game more longevity. However, the megabase I have built started to kill my performance around when I was starting to seize the 80 million-ish ore mines. I suspect much of this lag could be prevented with mods that make biters less in numbers but more powerful themselves.
Any such mods exist? Or something similar that could help the situation. Any tips welcome.
Playing on deathworld marathon btw.
