I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
My factory is getting to big !
My current computer specs are.
I7-2600k@4.5Ghz, 16GB DDr3 ram@1600mhz
GTX1080
34" ultrawide @3440x1440
My current factory has dipped to less then 30 fps/ups.
For any current games there are absolutely no point for me to upgrade to a current gen i7 when playing at the resolution i do. But Factorio is a completely different beast, is there anyone that have some experience with newer vs older CPUs at similar clock speeds in Factorio. There has been some performance optimization per clock since the i-7 2600 era, but is it enough to justify an upgrade to play Factorio? A i7-7700k clocked at 5/5.1 ghz would be a little improvement, but also a expensive investment, but there are no guaranties with the overclock.
Thanks in advance for any input.

You can gain a lot of performance by upgrading, since you get a massive speed boost from faster RAM in Factorio. DDR3 1600 vs. DDR4 3600 is quite a leap.

FPS are 30 but how are your UPS? your monitor resolution can't be helping.

FPS and UPS is identicalimpetus maximus wrote:FPS are 30 but how are your UPS? your monitor resolution can't be helping.
Well it do have a 32% speed module, it is overclocked from 3,4 to 4,5 GhzMooncat wrote:[shitpost] Try inserting some speed modules to the computer? [/shitpost]

If you post your save, I could tell you how much faster it runs on my pc with a 7700k.
It's an absolute beast for factorio though. Even some of the megabases can be played at stable 60 ups

about 20% faster single core performance, assuming you can overclock just as much.

Re: I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
Zeblote tested my factory on his 7700K, and he got 38 UPS/FPS where i got 25.
Also this thread is interesting

Maybee an upgrade, remove nukelier + the 0,16 optimizations i will get 60 again.

Re: I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
Is Zeblote's 7700K overclocked also? I have a 2500k@4.5Ghz, which is pretty much the same as Batou's 2600k@4.5. I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade for awhile but that generation of Intel CPUs has really held up well.

Re: I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
Hmm could I get the save as well? I am interested to see how bad my Ryzen runs it in comparison.
Re: I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
I second a public download. I want to see how big your base is and how badly it lags on my PC . I haven't gotten to the point where I have much lag, but compared to some bases on here mine are tiny.

Re: I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
what kind of voltage are you folks using to get to 4.5Ghz?
the voltage bump needed to get to 4.4 wasn't worth it to me.
2500K @ 4.3Ghz 1.25v

OK
I am a little hesitent to post the save in public, but i will do it "for sience"

This factory is my one and only save. It was created in 0.13 and been upgraded.
It is a Franken monster, patched and changed so many times, most of the ideas are stolen from youtubers, and downloaded blue prints. But I have adapted them to my needs.
It is a moded save , but most of the mods have been added one and one over time. Most noticeable Angels infinite ores, which makes me do thing a little different. For example, all smelting is done onsite at the ore patches.
It started with no biters, then I added them for a challenge, then disabled them for performance reasons when 0.15 made them trivial. Killing them all gained me 20 UPS at that time.
At this time my train system sucks and it is what i am working on right now, it is not very effient. Steejo would say "Oh God" so many times.

It is getting a little to technical now, and we should take the overclocking stuff to a off topic threadimpetus maximus wrote:what kind of voltage are you folks using to get to 4.5Ghz?

Mine is at stock voltage, just changed the multiplier to 45 in the BIOS, I am using a AIO Water cooler. Tinkering with voltage gives my 4,6 but for me it is not worth the extra fan noise.

Re: I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
Thanks for the save. I get a depressing 29 UPS with a 1700X @ 3.8GHz and 3333MT/s RAM with timings 14-14-14-34.
Re: I7-2600k vs i7-7700k single core performance
I'm getting 40-43, but that's without mods, so if I added the mods it'd be much lower. I'm amazed at what the devs have done, considering I'm playing it in HD on a fairly old intel core i7-950 (3.07GHz, not overclocked).

If you skip the mods you will not have long underground belts, and everything will stop. At least try with that one enabledJap2.0 wrote:I'm getting 40-43, but that's without mods, so if I added the mods it'd be much lower. Mods do not impact UPS much, i have allready tried to disable one and one at the time to see if there is a UPS hog in there.

Ah, that could falsely inflate it a bit .
