1. What did you do?
Put a chest onto an item that was placed on the ground by an inserter.
2. What happened?
The item was returned to my inventory, and an empty box was placed.
3. What did you expect to happen instead? It might be obvious to you, but do it anyway!
For the chest to be placed, with 1 item inside the chest.
Not sure if this is a bug or not, I haven't tried on my current save as its a no handcrafting play, but if the player had a full inventory and tried to place the box on the item, im not sure what would happen. I would have expected the chest to take the item into its contents.
Seems like a simple issue, mods and save attached if you need them, should be simple to replicate.

Re: Placing container on item moves item to inventory
So the trick, I have used for a long time to pick stuff from the ground, before I lerned about "F" key, does not work anymore
Re: Placing container on item moves item to inventory
This does seem to be a spot of inconsistency.
If you place a chest on top of an item on the ground manually, you get the item in your inventory.
If you order bots to place a chest on top of an item on the ground, you get the item put into the chest.
To make things consistent with the first, a bot should collect the item and put it in storage before the object gets placed (could be implemented by automatically adding a deconstruction order for an item on the ground if a ghost is put on top of it). To make things consistent with the second, manually placing a chest on an item should result in the chest containing the item.
