So looking at the coal liquefaction tech, (10 coal +25 heavy oil +50 water gives 35 heavy oil, 15 light oil and 20 petroleum, a net gain of 10 heavy oil), it seems like once you have the initial 25 heavy oil to start the process, you should be able to make an unlimited amount of the oils from only coal.
Has anybody tried this?
I have plenty of oil on my map, but it occurs to me that you only really need to set up close to a coal patch with nearby water and bring along a single barrel of heavy oil to obtain lots in the ways of petroleum products.

Yes that appears totally possible. It works a lot like the Bergius Process mod did, and I used that mod in much this way.
Re: Producing oil from only coal?
I have a plant like this running. But I'm thinking about shutting it down. The coal use is quite high, so the amount of coal you need for the amount of end result is pretty large compared to the normal oil based setup.
Does not help that I'm just using it for petroleum.

I'm also using the Coal Liquefication.
But only as a backup if for some reasons the regular Oil Production isn't sufficient (which happens mostly because I'm still playing a map from pre 0.14 and the oil wells weren't properly upgraded to 0.14 standards and neither to 0.15 standards)
Also I'm using my Oil to make Solid Fuel as backup for my Nuclear Plant. So Coal would be the backup for the backup. xD

Re: Producing oil from only coal?
I've not needed it thus far, but I can see that it may become useful if you have a surplus of coal, even after plastics and grenade production, and want to throw it into your oil chain to get solid fuel or even rocket fuel out of it. It's a nice option to have, but not every factory will need to use this process. That it requires a barrel of heavy oil to start the whole thing... meh. Drag one barrel and assembler 2 over, empty the barrel manually, loop the heavy oil from output back to input and it'll feed itself. It could have done without the requirement for heavy oil entirely.
