[15.9] R9 M275X Various Crashes

Post by gajbooks »

I'm using a Lenovo Y-40 laptop with switchable graphics. The Intel graphics work like a treat, but the dedicated ones really, really don't like Factorio.

"Various Crashes" might not seem helpful, but that's really what happens. Sometimes the game crashes on launch, sometimes it waits until you try and open your inventory, and sometimes it BSODs on launch and Steam pretends it has been uninstalled (All game files and saves are perfectly fine), and sometimes it just flickers a lot. One common denominator is that the startup screen changes strange colors (pure black with a purple loading bar) or has sections of randomly colored pixels. I've changed all the graphics settings to be as low as possible, but it didn't change anything (OpenGL and texture sizes included).

It works fine on the maximum settings with the Intel graphics, so this isn't a pressing problem for me, but it does seem that Factorio does something that my AMD card seriously doesn't like.

(Windows 10, Generic AMD driver 17.4.2)

If your computer BSODs that's not a problem with Factorio but something wrong with your hardware/software.

Except in the case of drivers it's not possible for a piece of software to BSOD your computer and Factorio doesn't do anything with drivers.

Ok, I guess. Despite having no problems with any other games, it must be my hardware. I'd blame AMD drivers for being terrible in certain situations, but only Factorio has this problem. In all honesty, it's probably the drivers. AMD acts like you should use your manufacturer drivers from 10 years ago and doesn't provide many features for the generic ones.
