Would it be possible to define two rails as connected, even if they are not adjacent/sharing a surface without breaking the rail pathfinding?
This could give a way to utilise trains across multiple surfaces, somewhat seamlessly introducing z levels to the game. This could allow underground mining, or rail overpasses.

No, the entire train system doesn't support anything like that.
