Total Energy O/P: Appx 480 MW
Heat Exchanges: 48, 12 / Reactor
Steam Storage Tanks: 44, 11 / Reactor
Steam Turbine: 80, 20 / Reactor = 464 MW
Steam Engine: 13, 4 / Reactor + 1 extra = 15.3 MW
Total Electricity O/P = 479.3 MW.

It looks awesome, but don't you want to leave yourself set up to lengthen reactor row there? You're getting 2x outputboost from the neightbor bonus, but when you start extending your row it gets better, a 4x2 row averages 2.5x, 8x2 averages 2.75x. With the 2x boost you''re getting now I think you only need 8 exchangers/nuc←duh. 2x boost = 3x output...

In normal operation mode a nuclear reactor can produce 40MW... You need 4 Heat Exchanges (4 * 10MW) so that you can efficiently convert the heat output into steam. You connect these to at most 6 steam turbine at 5.8 MW each (6 * 5.8 = 34.8 MW) + some steam engine to take rest of the steam. When I connected this setup to 6+ steam turbine and my test factory power consumption went beyond 40 MW, it made the performance / power production drop....
For connecting Reactors in 2 * 2 configuration, each reactor produces 120 MW... so each need 12 Heat exchanges and 20 Steam Turbines and needs a lot of water pressure to keep those heat exchanges working.
For 2 * 3, the inner reactors would be each producing 160 MW and would need 16 Heat Exchanges and around 27 Steam turbines.. This would be a challenge... I will try to see what I can do...
For connecting Reactors in 2 * 2 configuration, each reactor produces 120 MW... so each need 12 Heat exchanges and 20 Steam Turbines and needs a lot of water pressure to keep those heat exchanges working.
For 2 * 3, the inner reactors would be each producing 160 MW and would need 16 Heat Exchanges and around 27 Steam turbines.. This would be a challenge... I will try to see what I can do...

I like your design viveks711... altough I would have placed the Storage Tanks and Steam Turbines a little bit different.
About the 2x3 setup... I'm actively experimenting around with such a configuration:
Don't wonder about the Boilers between the Offshore Pumps and Heat Exchangers... I used to have a regular Steam Engine Power plant there before.
So what I did there was trying to test the Setup of Rhamphoryncus in this thread ... where he uses the 165 Degree Steam from the boilers to feed the Exchangers, effectively increasing the power output. If you heat the water to 165 Degrees before the Exchangers then the Ratio of Exchangers increases from 4 to 5 (probably because of the difference between 15 Degree Water and 165 Degree Steam in relation to the 500 Degree output)... so you can have at least 10 Steam Turbines in the end (more are possible if using the excess Steam from the Storage Tanks during spikes)
The maximum output is over 1200 MW I think, at least that's what I've seen once in a burst... I can't tell exactly due to the way the Boilers create additional power output above the 800MW that the Nuclear Reactors are capable of alone.
Also has the nice sideeffect that if either Fuel Cells or Solid Fuel/Coal run out it can switch between both power production methods using Pumps with Circuit Network conditions to determine which mode the power plant should run in... so I can have Boiler+Steam Turbine if Nuclear Fuel is out, Exchanger+Steam Turbine if Solid Fuel/Coal is out or Boiler+Exchanger+Steam Turbine if both are available in abundance for the combined effect.
As seen my design could easily be expanded with more reactors... and more exchangers/turbines. The only downside of my approach is that the heat transfer is hugely delayed due to the long Heat Pipes... so it takes quite a while to power up/down, but it works nonetheless.

Glad you like it. Was wondering if it would work with all the circuit network fiddling I did (really need to clean that up). If you have any ideas on how to further improve it, let me now.
Currently I'm thinking about building a ~2 GW plant... and also a ridiculous 5.8 GW plant for another map. Performance is Boilers+Exchangers, the nuclear part would be exactly 4GW from 26 Reactors in a 2x13 design, the Boilers deliver another exact 1.8 GW on demand... but I'm still at the conceptual stage of evaluating the possible layout and throughput issues. Especially on the Pipe mechanics... and also 1000 Boilers, 400 Exchangers and 1000 Steam Turbines are not really space friendly... It would be exactly 5 times the size of the above build. Also I don't know if the Heatpipes can take that since they are capped at 1 GW transfer rate, so I'd need at least 4 of them, but I'm also concerned about the required lengths (>250 tiles).

I was similarly inspired by that thread, and by your clever pump control switching idea, Medu.
Here is the [somewhat unconventional] bullpup-style result, 8x64[ish] tiles per 10-4-10 block.
Should scale up / tile well: for a 2x2 reactor setup it would be 96 tiles wide [6 pairs of rows], making it roughly 3x2 blocks plus reactor & supply area to the side.
Close up of the important bit: It operates the same way as yours does: standby reactor-only, reactor + preloading for max power, & emergency chem-boiler-only backup.
Additionally, if the "any flammables here" belt is empty it overrides to cold water ~> heat ex ~> turbines, regardless of the amount of 500 degree steam in the tank.
Uses 2 colour signals [red + green], 3 decider & 1 constant combi.
Blueprint for a single row, if anyone wants to have a closer look:

Why do you all preheat the steam? I gives no bonus compared to the same setup when split between fuel and nuclear and its wasting oil. (Either cause you burn coal or solid fuel)

I'm doing it for mutual backup reasons (if either Uranium or Oil or Coal runs out), also to have an additional buffer if running Nuclear becomes insufficient (preheating gives another 1.45x boost to energy production, so instead of 800MW it can output 1160MW), and because of the in general prettier ratios (10:4:10 vs 4:6.9).Distelzombie wrote:Why do you all preheat the steam? But that said in low power state (when the Factory is idle) I'm always Burning Solid/Rocket Fuel (with Nuclear turned off)... to preserve Uranium. Crude Oil is infinite, Uranium is not.
Okay well, technically... every source is almost infinite due to almost infinite map size.
On a side note it also guarantees that my Oil Industry doesn't get stuck with too much of something, especially now that Research also requires Lubricant on a regular basis. So if my Light Oil/Petroleum Gas storage tanks run full and I'm in desperate need of Heavy Oil I'm switching on the preheater to burn the excess Light Oil/Petroleum Gas as Solid Fuel to get the Refineries going to produce more Heavy Oil.

The pump switch allows me to bypass the boilers or the heat exchangers as necessary.
Here's a picture of the switch (lacking the necessary circuit network connections, but I added them later):
The pump switch allows me for following modes:
- Offshore Pump -> Heat Exchangers -> Steam Turbines (4 * 10MW = 40MW)
- Offshore Pump -> Boilers -> Steam Turbines (10 * 1.8MW = 18MW)
- Offshore Pump -> Boilers -> Heat Exchangers -> Steam Turbines (10 * 1.8MW + 4 * 10MW = 58MW)

Can your setup work with coal? A two reactor setup is good for midgame and then you'll probably dont have any other fuel.

In my big power plant 1160 MW (800MW Heat Exchangers, 360MW Boilers) that would be 360MW power that would have to be satisfied by coal... with an boiler efficiency of 50% that would be 720MW worth of coal. Each coal has 8MJ... so 90 Coal/second? Maybe? (I'm not really that good with the energy calculation stuff)
2.25 full express belts of Coal.
That's where the compression ratio of Solid Fuel (25MJ) (barely do-able with 1 Express belt) and Rocket Fuel (225MJ) (no throughput problems) becomes noticable.
So it would really start to pay off to turn the coal into oil products using the coal liquefication and then make solid fuel out of that.

It'll work with coal. Heck, if you double blue belt feed it, it'll work with wood in a pinch, especially early on. Rule of thumb: If it worked for 10 boilers using regular steam engines, it'll work for 10 boilers on turbines. Rocket fuel is just convenient as the plant becomes bigger, because it has a very high energy density - means you can supply a lot of boilers with a single blue belt - or even use the logistics grid to supply the boilers without much hassle. Coal... you'll be burning a lot of it. Probably better to use the coal liquification and then produce solid fuel from those products, and burn that instead - or even produce rocket fuel from it, with a few production modules you could squeeze out more burn for your rock!
Killcreek - have you tested your design under max load? Looks like the output of 2 heat exchangers is going through a single pipe, feeding 10 turbines from a single pipeline. I think you'll hit a flow rate limit under full load.
