I'm currently playing through trying to get the "no solar" achievement and I've noticed that one of the ingredients to making a portable solar panel is 5 normal solar panels, but I haven't done that research yet and can't make them.

I think it'd make more sense if before you could research portable solar panels, you need to have discovered solar power in general.

Yeah, it's like how the rocket silo needs concrete but the tech tree doesn't require it to research it.

The way I see it if a research node is focussed on a particular item, its research prerequisites should include what's needed to build that item. If it also unlocks other items as well, those are free to not have everything included.

For example, the rocket silo needs steel, concrete, pipes, electric engine units, and processing units to build, so having Steel Processing, Concrete, Electric Engine and Advanced Electronics 2 as prerequisites for its research makes sense.

The satellite is also unlocked by that research, but building it also needs solar panels and accumulators, which might not be available if you've been focussing on steam (whether coal or nuclear) for power. However, I don't mind those not being requirements for the rocket silo research because the way I see it, when doing the Rocket Silo research project, The Character is focussing her efforts on figuring out how to make a rocket silo and leaving what she's going to launch as an afterthought until she gets the current task done.

I was just about to post this lol. I think this should be changed: Portable solar panel needs normal solar panel

FYI tank and explosive cannon shells need explosives but no explosives research.
