[Rseding91] Rail Placement Bug

Post by 5luggy »

Hi,

I have a Problem, that has been there for several patches so far, with and without mods (Since the "new" rail placement system)
I have only been too lazy to report this since after a few hours i place rail with bots anyways and it doesn't matter
But with higher difficulty i need to place rails by hand for a long time so now here is the description:

When i place a straight rail and try to connect to that rail, i can no longer start placing rails connected to other locations

The game "remembers" where i last placed a rail and will automatically resume rail building there - in the direction of where i am trying to build rail parts.

Image

in this Image I first placed a few rails on the left side
then went to the right side, placed a rail, clicked on the arrow to connect from there

what happens is that the game will place rails from the left side in the direction of the right side (where i clicked on the arrow to start building rails from there).
This is no range limit

I can be on the other side of the map and the rails will still be placed where ever i last placed some Rails.

It can only be stopped, when the rail placing fails - i always carry several big buildings with me, and when i am done placing rails in one direction, i will palce this building where the next rails would have to be placed and then after it failed i can place rails at a new location.

I do not know if i made some settings for this, but i think mainly that it is a bug, because i have no range limit with this.
I had to walk literally for minutes so the location where game placed some rails in order to "break" the rail placement chain with a building.

If anyone has an Idea where is might come from i't be happy to hear!

Best regards

Sluggy

We had that issue in the past, but only on 32-bit versions: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=30735

Can you post a log file or at least tell us which version you're running (32 or 64-bit)?

I honestly don't know if i am running 32 or 64 bit.
I run x64 on Windows and simply installed it via steam.

I will check that this evening and provide log file

So,

the Factorio.exe is in a x64 folder within my steam directory, so it will be the 64 bit version

Below is the "factorio-current.log" content, i hope that helps.

Can you reproduce it in single player without the mods?

How can I reproduce it from a new save? Exact steps. Every time I try it always works perfectly.

I don't know what you mean by "from a new save"

None of my friends share this bug, i am not surprised it works perfectly on your end.

i can start a new game and go straight for rails or load an old save
can play multi or singleplayer
can play with or without mods

in the end it will look like this:

http://i.imgur.com/YF1kQhN.mp4

It is hard to see but after i scrolled out and walked a bit down i placed a new single rail and clicked on the bottom arrow of that rail as if i wanted to place new rails going downward.

Try to reproduce it with the .zip standalone version from the factorio website.

I noticed that you selected the 0.14.22 version in the Betas tab on purpose, set it to NONE (which currently defaults to 0.14.22) and verify the game files and then check if it still happens.

Someone had the same issue here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=40460
The solution was to go to %appdata%\Factorio and delete all its contents. If you do that then make a backup first, and if the issue is resolved by doing that then upload your backup for the devs to analyze, you can omit the saves and mods directory. It might be an issue with the config.ini file or other files in %appdata%\Factorio.

Hey Daniel,

I tried out your solution advise with the deletion of the appdata

simply deleted the entire folder, started factorio, and it worked...

Now i don't know where that bug excactly came from but at least it is gone.

Thank you very much for that!

you mentioned uploading my backup for the devs - in what files might they be interested? i'd be happy to provide!

Please upload the complete contents of the %appdata%\Factorio folder from your backup at the time you had that issue, you can remove the mods and saves folder (to save space), and also the temp and archive folders if there are any.

I don't know which file is actually causing this issue, but uploading the contents of the %appdata%\Factorio folder (excluding the folders I mentioned above) will probably allow the devs to find the issue.

Attached is now the App data folder without Mods or Saves.

Thanks for the help!

[daniel34 -- deleted the attachment since it also contains the service-token, which is sensitive information. PM me if you need the actual attachment, but I think this has been solved by my explanation below.]

Thank you for uploading the appdata folder, I think I found the issue.

5luggy has rebound the controls, and this issue happens when rebinding the "Build ghost" assignment to Left mouse button (default: Shift + Left mouse button). I can clearly reproduce it on my setup. The simplest way to reproduce it is to just go to Options --> Controls and set the assignment to Left mouse button, without the Shift modifier key. Try to lay a few rails afterwards and you'll see the issue that 5luggy mentioned in the OP. The rail will always try to continue from an earlier location instead of the newly selected rail piece.

You don't need to feel stupid, this bug has been reported at least 4 times in the last year and we never found the cause, thanks to you we now actually get to solve it. It had been attributed to using a 32-bit version but that was just coincidence, the fact that it was a simple keybinding issue never occured to us.
