This is a simple mod enhancing realism and difficulty. Alien interaction is less exhausting, recipes are more diverse with less material for high-tier items.
Motive
Main features:
Restructured technology tree. Steel, concrete and electric engine are the cornerstones of automation. Sulfur is obtained from the Oil refinery.
Unlocked from the start: Light armor, shotgun, stone wall, landfill.
The cost of steam engines, assembly machines etc. is so high, a large burner-styled base is necessary.

Survival with no safe area: Small biters have much shorter vision distance, making it easier to creep among nests. Shotgun and light armor give you a fighting chance.

New/replaced items:
- copper ingot, pig-iron ingot, steel ingot, steel gear wheel, ball bearing, steel rod, girder.
- 50-cal sniper rifle - (small nest eradication with turret backup)
- Tank HMG (middle-sized nests alone), Railgun
- Swarm of Heavy destroyer drones
- Science packs, modules
Deleted items: Beacon
Further balancing is very likely. If you come up to a nice playable map with large alien presence and no safe area, please post the map exchange string. Thank you and enjoy.

This one seems very promising. Large alien presence and still there are many patches of resources accessible. Shotgun and light armor really helps.
With hazard concrete I can safely try permadeath approach :)

I saw this on the mod portal recently, and really enjoying the mod! One thing you could do is make a config to replace vanilla items with Realism equivalents (Iron plate = Steel plate, Iron Gear = steel gear) To make this work at least a bit with some other mod setups. Well done on this mod otherwise!

New version is up for Factorio 0.14.12

New content:
Charcoal - wood is no longer usable as fuel (regrettably not even in boilers).
Gearbox
Forging machine - for basic ingot processing.

Tweaking:
Electric furnace cannot be used for smelting, only for steel, bricks and pyrolysis. No advanced circuits needed.
Added some minor changes in recipes.

This is a nice challenge if you skip the starting area and head north, deep into the enemy territory. Use dense forest to conceal emissions.

As a modder, do you have an insight into the starting area resource spawn? My initial attempts were unsuccessful.

Fun Fact: The research for grenade damage 5 doesn't exist!

It seems that 0.14.14 has issues for realism in itself.
