Oil Storage Imbalance

Post by wookz »

A storage tank can hold 2500 units of liquid. If I put 25 liquids per barrel, I can put 480 barrels in a chest, and store 12,000 liquids. Seems like I should be able to store more liquid in a tank than a chest, since tank is 9 squares big, and a chest is 1, and barrels have a packing factor that is less than 1, because they're cylinders. In the same space a tank can store 2500 liquids chests can store over 100,000.

A single cargo wagon can carry 10,000 liquids in barrels. It takes 166 seconds (or maybe longer/shorter, pipes are complicated) to move the same amount by pipeline. So a x-4-x train can carry more oil in barrels than a pipeline with pumps every 357 pipes can, for distances less than a train can cover in 11 minutes. Hopefully the new tank cars can carry more.

I realize there might be game balance reasons for these imbalances. But I find I can't suspend belief on this, and find it annoying.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that liquid transport was being looked at for .15, but I'll be damned if I can find it again, and apparently I suck at Google. Sorry if this post is irrelevant.

To help you loose your mind on your balancing efforts :
I can put 80 chests in one car, and I can put 48 cars in one chest

There is a moment when gameplay wins over realism, I think we're around there :)

"Is that a train in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"
"No it actually is a train."
