The way the research screen pops up when completed....
.....at any time, including during fights.
Less of that kind of thing, please.
Thank you.

I think it's fine, it does pause the game after all.

No, I agree, it can b a burden at times, either when you are planning/setting things up, or when timing is of the essence like fighting.
Yes, it pauses, but you still usually loose a bit of time when unpausing, and it even makes me wait for the research to finish (and not launch the next) when I am going for a fight.
But well, we are always going to complain about this "research complete", a lot of people did complain about the female voice announcing it too.

It would be much less obtrusive to have the research complete show up as a large indicator icon in a corner of the screen (similar to many strategy games). Clicking on the icon would bring up the research screen and right clicking would dismiss it. I find myself very frequently dismissing the research screen because I'm in the middle of something, then forgetting to start up research again because there is no longer a clear indicator that research is necessary (it does say this in the upper right, but there is no graphical differentiation to draw attention to the fact that nothing is being researched.)
Re: The way the research screen pops up when completed....
I agree with this. I often forget to start up another research after it pops up. An icon in the corner or something might be useful.
Re: The way the research screen pops up when completed....
I never get distracted by this thing.
Re: The way the research screen pops up when completed....
What I would like to have is some target: I set up the target tech I want to research and the research stops (edit: I meant "and the research starts") and until then the research isn't stopped. After that I want to have some big icon or so on screen.
When you also think: With multiplayer this stop in the game would not longer work, so you can be sure, that it will be changed somehow.

Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

I agree... it pops up right when you least want it to more often than not.
middle of a fight...
just as i'm about to get run over by a train!
and one of the worst for me... I spend a moment planning what i'm about to build, measure everything out... then it interupts me and i have to measure it out again.

TIL people measure things in this game.
Re: The way the research screen pops up when completed....
A research queue would be nice. Choose the next three things you want to research. When one finishes, the next starts immediately. A small notification could appear near the research status bar to show that one had finished and a slot is now open to choose another.
Re: The way the research screen pops up when completed....
Resurrecting this thread, as I was going to make a similar suggestion.
My main issue is that completed research closes any window you happen to already have open. So if you're configuring something, then research completes, you have to go back to where you were, which is very jarring. A simple quality-of-life improvement would be to wait until there isn't a window open before showing the research screen.
As an "extreme" case, let's say I want to pause a train for a moment, so I open up the timetable and go to set it to manual. Just before I click on it the research screen pops up, I pick a new research and then close the screen. I take a moment to remember what I was doing and don't realise I never actually set the train to manual. As I'm doing whatever, the train leaves, stranding me. Not a terrible situation, but frustrating nonetheless. The game shouldn't interrupt me when I'm in the middle of something like that.

Well the popup if the research screen is an issue since 3 years. Do you know, you can turn the research screen off in the config?

Prior to the 1.0 release of Factorio, I would expect the developers to implement some sort of alert system that allows you to acknowledge or ignore the notification that your research has completed.
