Help with biters

Post by aober93 »

So im playing with biter settings at max and i need some suggestions. In vanilla, i could hardly get a fresh map with just enough resources ,in which i will quickly run dry and cannot expand. RSO gave me a better spawn location. And with marathon mod you barely keep up defending and slowly run dry.

The problem is that with teh initial resources you cannot build up enough tech to go offensive. The aliens develop faster and are at your door and there are too many big biter spawns near ur base. With like up to 30 worms in them. I dont have destroyer bots, or flamethrower or any oil for that matter or tanks. I can barely push out a handful laser turrets because there is not enough resources in the starting location. With marathon mod i dont even have oil tech and the resources are out, and the biters are too big to battle against. So i timed how long it takes to kill a nest with your machine gun and its rougly 40 seconds? lol. Thats 1 out of 20. And there are tons of aliens and worms. I use turrets to help but they run out of ammo cause they shoot non stop for minutes. Well they actually run out of ammo in like 1 minute. In short, no chance with higher tier tech.

My starting location is set to biggest. But that doesnt help.

So whats the trick for big biter settings? Or is that not really a viable option?

PS: with normal settings the aliens become very weak in mid to late game. But i prefer the normal early game.

what is your setting, when you have bitters at max? do you have also resources maxed, or at normal? since at normal it will not be enough, but maxed resources should be fine for good production of AP ammo.
don't bother with lasers in early, combined gun and sniper turrets with upgrades and AP ammo are most efficient, and you can produce lot of AP ammo, just setup feeding belt with long inserters.

later, when you have bots, you can use lasers for turret creeping. but until then, stick with AP, or if you have free area, you might use flamethrower, just make sure, you cover them with snipers, otherwise ranged bitters will kill them (problem with flamethrowers is oil tho', like with lasers)

mind, i use long inserters, since aoe worm attacks otherwise can trash inserter.

Yea it all comes down to resources. But this rso mod creates chunks full with big worms right from the start. I checked with a cheat code that reveals the map, which made me gave up on my recent map. Its not happening that i kill any nest of 100 small and big worms with just turrets and ammo, and no augmentation. Hmm maybe but combat sux anyway. Im just in for the defensive game.

But rso gives me good starting locations. It has all ores. I spent the last hours on research, and the best i can probably do is mod the mod. I will increase starting location ore values, and lower enemy density in the mod. And whenever i want i raise the enemy value. Then i can also use marathon mod which i want to try. Hope that works, and hope its balanced lol.

I have never used RSO, but can't you just edit the map and add those initial resources before staring the game?

I'm not sure where you got the RSO that has chunks full of big worms?
RSO creates quite sparse enemy bases by default and big worms are not spawned until quite far from starting area (it's about 42 chunks or so).
If you have this in latest RSO version (2.3.0) then please post bug report on RSO board with save and mods.

It was because i set biters to max. It makes like 20% of all chunks outside the starting zone be occupied by many worms in a square shaped form. I set enemies to normal thats much better for a starting game at least. That is until i have the highest tier tech and no resource limit.
