2 Newbie questions

Hi,
1. :I just bought the game and one thing is really annoying me: Trees on ores. Is there a way to disable it or at least that trees spawn less?
2. :What does the starting area do?

Is really chopping them down so difficult or time consuming? It shouldn't take more than a minute to clear out an average ore deposit.

starting area is clear of enemies and has guaranteed startup resources if i recall correctly

Yes you are right, I didn't notice that my pickaxe was broken, and that's why it took so long.
