Crash upon opening Factorio from Steam

Post by niwot0525 »

It can't be good to start out a new forum account by posting an issue, but here we go. Also, if this is the wrong subforum, please tell me; I couldn't find an appropriate forum for crash reports.

The Basic Info:

Whenever I open the game from Steam's play button or from the application directory I get an "Unknown error occurred" crash. It told me to post my saves and log files here, and gave me a file path to the folder containing my logs, which, with me on a mac, was my Application Support directory.

Good so far, right? No.

Another thing I'm doing is running Factorio off of an external hard drive. I connect it to two different computers interchangeably. The steam application is stored on this disc and I've already configured it to store supposedly all the data on the hard drive in a designated folder.

Until now, I've had no issues with this strategy. However, this crash brings up a few questions.

First, how to fix the crash. I hope this is fixable without wiping my game.

Secondly, where are my saves really stored? There's the contents of the application in steam common, which is where I thought they were (and where a copy of them certainly are), but now I've found this other directory.

Third, if there is an option (and if it matters), can I change where factorio stores this data other than Application Support?

The Data:

Here're both my logs:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/941dlyv0qrbv ... UoPxa?dl=0

Here's my saves folder:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8vhmejpalw95 ... 7UvHa?dl=0

TLDR: Steam and game on external hard drive. Crash with unknown error once sprites are ~halfway through loading.

For now, I'll move this to Technical help, as I'm not sure there is a bug, be'll move it back to bugs reports if there is a bug.

Next, concerning your saves, there is a page on the wiki telling all the important folders are :
https://wiki.factorio.com/Application_directory

I'm not a Mac user, but I assume what you're looking for is there :

Code: Select all

~/Library/Application Support/factorio
Also on the same page, at the bottom, you're told how to change that directory : https://wiki.factorio.com/Application_d ... _directory
Hope it helps.

And for the crash problem : how much VRAM do you have available for your Geforce 650M ? Minimal VRAM is 512 MB, recommanded is 2 GB. I'm honestly very bad at reading Factorio logs, so I think someone else will do far better than me.

Hmm, it looks like it finished loading sprites, continues by loading sounds and crashed when rendering progress bar. That is kind of weird.

1.) Try to reboot your Mac (i know, rebooting is for Windows user, but it helped at least once on Mac too! :D)
2.) If that doesn't help go to Factorio properties in Steam, and set launch options to

Code: Select all

--gfx-safe-mode

Thanks for the responses. I would be trying these to fix it, but...

I've moved to my other computer, and after plugging in the external drive and loading steam (so exactly what I was doing earlier) the game boots completely normally. Everything appears to be functional. If I move back to my other computer and the issue returns, I'll be trying your fixes, and if those don't work, posting here again.

Thanks again for all the help!

Ok, thanks for info.

As for your other questions, Factorio saves to ~/Library/Application Support/factorio, if you found save files in steam folder, it is probably Steam's copy of the files for Steam Cloud.

You can edit write-path in ~/Library/Application Support/factorio/config/config.ini to point to whatever path you want Factorio write files. It will redirect entire Factorio folder (mods, saves, logs) and disable Steam Cloud because it operated only with the default location of saves folder. But you probably don't need Steam Cloud.
